1968 Sedan Turbo/EFI

Post by nbuscemi »

Hello!

This is my first post here. After many post on the Samba I decided that here would be a better place to post my "project" as folks here tend to be more open minded to "other than stock" or "typical dual weber" setups.

Back story:
About a year ago I purchased my third ACVW and after a month or so of fiddeling with the stock carb (34 Pict3) and stock-ish distributor (Pertronix SVDA) I decided that I wanted EFI on my 1968 Type 1. Most of the off the self kits are major bucks and I figured production cars have been running EFI for decades... so why not use one theirs instead of buying a new one.

Here are the results, after almost a year of work (weekends only).

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewt ... highlight=

Megasquirt 2 (V3)
Ford EDIS-4
Ford Throttle body and custom intake
'75-79 VW Type 1 manifolds and fuel injectors
T3 50 trim turbo
Homemade up-pipe and down-pipe
TurboSmart BOV and wastegate
Alot of blood, sweat, and tears.

This is still an on going project, but I figured I'd start posting here as I complete my "race car".

Nice build.......Do you still have the O2 sensor in the the collector of the header ?

Yes, the o2 is in the collector. The exhaust wasn't hot enough in the downpipe to keep it happy. I know having the O2 there is less accurate, but its still better than where it was.

Having it in the collector could skew the readings because of backpressure. I have seen up to a 10% or so swing leaner or richer when under boost with my pre turbo sensors. Be careful.

Edit...I see that you are running a narrow band sensor...

Welcome to the STF and the Forced Induction Forum.......my favorite place to be honest......

Looking at your pics on theSamba it seems you J.B. Welded your injector bungs into the intake manifolds......

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewt ... sc&start=0

I'm not sure I would trust that. Maybe in a N/A situation but putting boost to it and pressurizing the intake looks like an accident waiting to happen.

If it blows one of those out you have a very high fire potential with that injector spraying a fine mist of fuel in an oxygen rich area along with a good amount of heat.

Otherwise....nice job on a DIY setup.

As for a wideband...PLX makes one that I have been running for over 2 years.. The price is very reasonable and the digital multi gauge is great since it can daisy chain up to 32 controllers and fits in a dash. I replaced my voltmeter gauge in the dash since it will also display the volts along with the AFR on my system.

Extending the harness is easy if needed since it is a mini molex plug available online for cheap and you just use some 18-20 gauge wire to lengthen it.

Yeah, that was an idea I was playing with. Those manifolds never made it onto the car. I was fortunate enough to find a set of Type 1 EFI manifolds at a swap meet. That's whats on the car now as well as blue top L-jetronic injectors (185cc) not the Ford injectos in the picture in question.

Those injectors are good for maybe 140 hp if that.

Watch your Duty Cycle once you get on boost to make sure you don't max them out.

I ran 336 cc injectors on my 1679 and have maxed them out. I now use 440 cc injectors.

My target HP is only 100hp to the wheels. The engine pretty much stock. Only upgrades are Mahle pistons, 043 heads (stock mexican) and Empi filter oil pump. Eventually I'm going to build a 1915cc with better internals and of course much larger injectors.

I was running 24lb injectors on my 1776 and they were maxed out at 6lbs of boost. I then changed to 45lb injectors and E85, has worked well at 9lbs boost. Looking good.
