There was a working Direct Fire Ignition System from Pacific Motorsports (Electromotive Coils) on our 2.0 Type 4 with 8.5:1 and stock feeling cam.
The device's timing settings are set in degrees as follows:
@ idle 12 BTDC
@3000 rpm 17 BTDC
@8000 rpm 0 BTDC
Once warm it idles high @ 1400 rpm so I will reduce down to 10 BTDC to see how that effect idle.
It runs well with these settings but does feel like there is power left on the table. I was thinking of advancing timing at 3000 rpm and know with a distributor 30 degrees advance at 3500 is ok. What are your thoughts with this device ?
Setting at 8000 rpm I'm not sure about as the over-rev function is set at 6250 rpm

Re: Older Direct Fire Ignition System Settings
Would you like my current MS3 ignition map for ideas?
I'm running a Web73 with 8.6:1 on 2L heads, so it should be in the ballpark.
At WOT, 27-30 degrees, then hold steady would be a starting baseline.
I have seen retarding a few degrees at high RPM go both ways, depends on the engine, withe the added turbulence you really should need less, but zero's out to lunch.
At lower MAP and with lean mixtures it will like a LOT more timing.
Is it only adjustable for WOT?
' need to work on these so the advance and afr target areas line up again...
AFR target Ign table 1 for gasoline

Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.
