Whats the year they stopped putting the type 1 engines in the buses? i know in 68 they changed the appearance but when did they do the engine change? and is there any advantage in the newer engines than the old ones?, seems like the older bug engines have more stuff you can buy for them...

in 71 was the last year of the bug engine and in 72 they started with the type 4 motor. the type four has a alluminum case witch is stronger and is not going to definately crack like the type one

The type 4 engine is a better engine. Way more torque, at 2.0 L it pulls decently, although the Van is still underpowered even with that.
You can improve performance too. Check out type4 forum.

yeah the type 4 is a great little power house, that is why there are so many conversions going on now I guess, ( putting them into Bugs)
only thing I hate is the Hyd valves, hate burning myself on the heat exchangers

I agree, the type 4 is far better than a type 1! I ran my bus for ninteen hours straight and never had any overheating, pulled the mountains doin 60 and had plenty of pedal left on level ground.... try that with a type 1 powered bus!

Drove my 70 bus from Portland, Or to Tulsa non-stop in 40 hours. Right up over the rocky mountains on I-70.Five of us in the car.
Did it again the following year in a 78 Westy. Much easier. The single will do it NO DOUBT but the T-4 is so much more capable.
I think the difference would be in those uninitiated driving the older cars for the first time. There will be more problems. The T-4 will do it with less strain. Good luck. Bob Ingman

Rich, most type 4's do not have hydraulic valves. You do not need to use them if you don't want to anyway. Just put in a solid lifter cam with matching lifters. Type 4 started in august of 68 I think..in the type 4 411. The type 4 engine showed up in the bus in August of 71 (72' model year). Ray

Ray, after reading about vans for months on here,(been a bug guy, first van ) that was probably the way to go when I rebuilt the engine, I was planning on a quick sale and such but the more I tinker with it the more I think I will keep it. Next time I will know better but I will just put the burn mark down as her giving me alittle kiss for making her purrrrr.
