I got my fuel pump :)

Post by lowpro1984 »

Hi guys I finaly got my fuel pump ive been needing to get the bus running. I went yesterday to pick it up for 50 bucks and then I went to a local vw shop and got my fuel filter for 4 bucks and then I went home and installed it. But I ran into a problem Image When I unpluged the line coming from the gas tank no gas came out. But when I took my last fuel pump off it gas did come out. I moved the line around alittle and a little bit of gas and orange gas came out. I think my gas tank is full of crap or the fuel line got cluged. Whats should I do?

Thank You,
Chris R.

Blow back through it and try to get some bubbles. That should tell you if there is gas in there or not. If you have to pull the tank off to clean it its a MAJOR job. Plan on all day as the engine must be removed and reinstalled. Good luck. Bob Ingman

Hi bob I know theres gas in there because I put about 2 gallons in there but I was feeling the fuel line and it felt soft in some places and hard in other places so it might be cloged. I think this might be the reason my last fuel pump went out because the fuel filter got full of crap and wouldent let gas go in the fuel pump and the fuel pump got hot and seized Image Is there any new metheds that can flush a tank? any way I can do it with the tank in the bus? Thank you for all the help Image

chris,

i don't remember what bus you have, but it is possible to take the tank out without pulling the motor IF you have a type IV. if you have a type 1 you have to oull the motor.

you need to lower the motor a bit by disconnecting the moustache bar, and if possible removing the upper trans carrier bolts, then CAREFULLY lower the rear of the motor down to get more space to work. it is still a big job, but you may need to do it. first disconnect the battery, then try taking the supply line off the tank itself and see if you get fuel flowing out. be careful with the gas, and have a fire extinguisher at hand. if fuel flows readily from the tank outlet, then you should be OK. have you replaced the fuel lines lately? if not, do it, and get some good continental fuel hose for the job, it will last, the gates or goodyear stuff will not.

Thank you both for the help with this. My bus is a 77 so I do have the type 4 motor so I should be fine with what you said scott Image I am going to put a plastic bag over the starter and pull off the fuel line from the bottom of the tank hopfully some will come out. Its weird because when I took off my old fuel pump gas started pooring out of the line and then I stuck a screw driver in the line to plug it and when I took the screw driver out this time a cuple drops came out but thats it. If I take my fuel line out of the buttom of the tank and if fuel comes out that is good but cant it still be really dirty? I really dont want to mess up the pump I just got Image

Thank You,

chris,

you don't want to take the tank out, is what you don't want to do. the filter is in front of the pump, so it should take care of protecting it. make sure to use the bosch filter, not aftermarket. you be the judge of what you see, in terms of really dirty stuff coming out, or whatnot. make sure you disconnect the battery before doing anything with the fuel lines.

Hey I just wanted to give you guys the lowdown Image I took the fuel line out of the bottum of the tank and nothing came out Image So I got a peace of fine metal wire and started pushing it into the bottum of the tank and it felt like dirt but I got it pritty far in there and pulled it out and clear gas was poring out Image I hooked up the fuel line and got in and tryed to turn it over. I got it to start up but then it would die as soon as I let off the starting position so I thought the fuel pump relay was bad sence the fuel pump starts when the starter starts and then after that the relay takes care of it so I ran the wire that the PO ran from the coil to the fuel pump and then tryed to start it and it started up Image The gas pedel kept getting stuck but other then that it was running real good. I drove it around the block a cuple of times and everything worked good Image I have another fuel pump relay so I will hook that up soon and I also need to get the front end alined Image I guess the PO ran the wire from the coil to the fuel pump for a reason Image I was really happy to know how smooth the auto trans was. Well guys thank you both very much for all the info Image

Thanks Again,
Chris R.
