Seriously the '76 top sleeper will not do well on your '71 w/o serious mods.
Check out the Bob the Tomato site from a guy in Canada on how to do it right.

i am also thinking of replacing my 72 westy top with the top off of a 69 sportsmobile which will go straight up be more functional . any ideas ? anybody?

I read once that the "easy" way to do this conversion is to cut the whole top off the doner, then cut the whole top off the recipient and weld the new to the old.
The "hole" in the '76 is significantly different than earlier bus, virtually the whole top is missing past the front seats.
