Critique my build

Post by mrblyoung »

Hey Guys,

I have been itching to build a turbo motor for a few years now. I currently have a 2276 squishy-piston N/A motor in my bug but I am itching for more power. I had intended on changing heads, dropping the CR and advancing the cam timing on the current motor, but I purchased this extra motor as a potential motor for a bus project of mine, but I am looking at the specs and considering using it because it seems pretty well configured. Motor was professionally built and has 1000 miles on it and has been sitting in dry storage.

The motor:
2276
New CB Super Case
82mm CB Crank - Chevy Journals
5.325 Scat H-Beam Rods
Cima P&C's
SLR XR296 Cam (296 degrees duration, 255 at .050", .512" Lift with 1.4's) - right between an Engle 120 and an FK8
CB 1.4:1 Rockers
DRD L6T Heads (42x37)
8:1 CR

Parts I have collected over the past 2-3 years for a turbo build:
A-1 1-5/8 SS Turbo Header
Turbosmart Ultra Gate 38mm Wastegate
Turbosmart Vee Port Pro BOV
ID1000 Injectors
MS3-Pro ECU
CB Performance High Flow End Castings with Injector Bungs
Acura GSR 60mm Throttle Body (small, compact, has an on-board MAP sensor and a really simple throttle linkage setup)
I have not sourced a turbo yet as I figured I should buy that last once I determined what the final motor combo would be. Looking at a T3/T4 hybrid with a .48 exhaust housing.

What are your guys thoughts? Decent combo?

I know a lot of people are not using the CB High Flow End Castings. Some say the casting quality is poor, they don't flow evenly to all cylinders and they are ugly as sin. The set that I got for a steal look to be pretty nice, and figured if running on a boosted setup, maybe the positive pressure would eliminate that. Also trying to make a neatly packaged setup and trying to keep things minimalistic. Also considering water/meth injection due to not really having space for an intercooler on my bug.

Sounds like you got some nice quality parts.

Any idea how much the engine makes now and what you want it to make with a turbo?

You should choose the turbo specific for the power band you want.

Quick spool and hard bottom end pulls or high rev and power at the end of the tacho?

You gonna tune and build it yourself?

Engine made 150HP with a mild tune through a set of 45 Dells and a cheap 1-5/8 header.

I don't think an FK8 will rev too high, but would definitely like it to have some bottom end and mid range punch. Too many revs = short lifespan and added heat.

The engine is already built. The car is already built, already running EFI and running Microsquirt. I will have a friend help me fabricate the intake parts that are needed and enlist someone that is a better tuner than I am to tune it.

Sounds pretty good to me, but that turbo might be a little small. I had a T3 with a .48 exhaust on my stock 1600. It didn't work great, but it would spool ok.

I had a .48 and a .49 on my 2276 could hardly tell the diff. I'm running a .63 now IIRC
go for it , you already have it,right? you can always swap it out to a better turbo, take me a few minutes as long as it's "cool'
I'm going to try a fk8 on my next build too.
that combo will give awesome bottom/Mid and top end 8) ,, and make u swallow ur Gum

What was your reasoning to switch from the .48 to a .63? Bigger turbo? Wanted more top end? I see a lot of people saying “go .48 on a street car for a quicker spool”. I just don’t want to go too big and regret it. I’m not drag racing this so I want the power to be in the usable street range. But I also don’t want to go too small and choke the motor, make it inefficient and just create more heat.

Perfect. I’m ready for something to put me back in my seat. My current setup doesn’t do that.

The .48 will be nice. Mine pushed my combo to a very easy 278whp on a pretty soggy tune. Cam similar to fk8 and L7t heads. Very nice combo to drive.
