Type 4 exhaust market
I just spent the last four hours looking for a new exhaust for my 2056. My old one is a stock system that's been patched together. I'm just looking for a system that is a lil better then stock. Everything thing that I found is out of country. Either England, Germany or Taiwan. Is there anybody here in the states that carries a after market system for my motor that I don't have to wait weeks for or pay off the wall shipping for and possible import fees. I don't need anything to fancy just want something that's carried and or made here in the USA.

Re: Type 4 exhaust market
So...by stock system...do you mean a standard "log style" type 4 muffler?
Like this?
While Dansk is not OEM quality....it historically has some rough welds at the ports....they have good fit and are perfectly servicable.

Re: Type 4 exhaust market
Nope not that one. It wasn't stock. Except for the heater box pipes just with out the boxes and the typical header system with the banana type muffler. I'm looking to upgrade but it seems like no one in the states sells any good upgraded exhaust. I'm looking for something like the A1 exhaust. I've got the money I just hate waiting for stuff from over seas especially in the crisis that our country is in now. Plus I'm a big believer in buying local.. do you guys have any ideas on a USA manufacture that produces a good type 4exhaust system?

Unfortunately, this is one of those big issues for those of us trying to do a T4 conversion in the States. I don't even mind the prices so much for what's available in Europe, but shipping is ridiculous(often equal to the cost of the exhaust, itself). Vendors in the States simply don't cater to the T4. It is understandable, but unfortunate. I apologize that I don't have any suggestions beyond what I'm sure you've already considered(because there are none). I'm in the same frustrating boat.

A1 Muffler makes exhaust systems - I bought one and exported it to South Africa for my T4 project

Re: Type 4 exhaust market
A1 has a crazy long lead time. Not Tiger's fault...he's the only one doing it, and each one is made to order. They're also pretty expensive. Sometimes you just want something that's going to get the job done and not squeeze out every ounce of power.
That said, the OP already has a simple system and is looking for performance. There's always Tangerine racing. They have exhausts specifically for upright conversions, however, like A1, they're built to order, and thus are pretty expensive. I guess I could have suggested them in my first response, but I'd forgotten about them. They even have mufflers that exit from the factory holes

Re: Type 4 exhaust market
I paid about $800 for the complete sidewinder in stainless, incl muffler
a lot cheaper than the european models
otherwise get the $500 J-pipes from csp and have a local shop make up the rest

Re: Type 4 exhaust market
These aren't equal length but will be better than stock . coupled with some J pipes and a muffler the price is reasonable .

Wow, great suggestions...at least for me. I think stubs are great. Too bad those VS header pipes don't use stubs(not saying that's a deal breaker).
There's these as well. Already shortened for a T4 into Beetle conversion https://store.vintagespeed.com.tw/TYPE- ... p132807885

You can buy that same header unit...basically a copy of a T-bird header....in stainless. I believe its made by EMPI
https://www.jbugs.com/product/3771.html ... hsQAvD_BwE
and for $100 less
https://www.appletreeauto.com/STAINLESS ... zkQAvD_BwE
https://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.as ... C13%2D3771
I found it for a good deal less at VW heritage...but then again its pounds and it shipping.
The T-bird style header while not ideal...Jake Raby said he noted that it made about 5-10% difference on a well tuned engine.

Re: Type 4 exhaust market
Vipergreen...unfortunately, EMW no longer sells those. I was in contact with Jorge about them within the past two months, and was told they're NLA. Another former good source, but now dead end, is Shartbuilt in Oz. He offered a set, much like those pipes from EMW but were already properly shortened for an upright conversion. Alas, he stopped selling them some time ago.
What I've found, at least for my first T4 I'm building (1911cc), is a driver side Bus heat exchanger, and a passenger side 411/412 heat exchanger. The passenger side Bus wouldn't work from the particular paring I came upon because it used an "F" pipe. The 411/412 unit is a direct match to the Bus one. The will need to be shortened, but I won't know exactly how much until I get the engine mocked up and mounted in the car.
These will be mated to a Bursch Tri-Y header made for a 914 1.7/1.8 engine.
Of course, the OP of this thread was/is looking for something beyond what I've described.

Talk to Tiger at A1 Mufflers. His setup was amazing for the TYPE 4.

If anyone has saved the Jake baby exhaust dyno test please put it here or in a sticky.
There are only type one tests on the Internet.
Manufacturers aren't keen on the results?
