Side mount turbo

With Turbo and Super charging you can create massive horsepower with vw motors.

The hole I cut for the turbo discharge pipe on the old setup was interfered by the CB manifolds (the injectors sit much higher than that of the old OEM manifolds). I would have had to drill a new hole higher up in the wheel well.

As for the RPi dash, this is how I have mine mounted...

The center console and face plate are hand made. The RPi and LCD controller are mounted behind the face plate. I'm using a DC-DC buck converter wired to the ignition switch for power.

Looks great! I’m looking to do something very similar to that for mine. Though I am unsure if I’m mounting to the trunk above or if I want a frame similar to why you have.

Its worked really well, even being 6'2". I also added a cup holder (the lower horizontal loop below aluminum plate).

What’s the frame made of?

Also what cam did you go with? I am looking to build a very similar engine this winter.

It's made from 1/4" steel rod. It was a battery display rack that was in the scrap pile at work. I just cut, bent, and welded it until it looks like what it does now. The face plate is 1/8" Aluminum.

The cam is from CB Performance. It's their mildest turbo-cam. I'm running stock sized valves so no need for an overly aggressive cam.

Smooth idle but adds a lot of grunt to bottom of powerband. Also noticed turbo spools a few hundred RPM sooner as well.

Thanks for the information!

I think I’m not going to do a frame for this one. I have some 1/4 aluminum at work that should hold and look good.

As for the cam thanks I’m still torn on what direction to go. IE small lobe center for torque or wider for a general power bump.

The cam you choose needs to be based on what heads you have or are planning on running. These two parts have to match / compliment each other. Best bet would be to get in touch with the cam / head manufacturer of your choosing (I prefer CB, have had good luck with their parts) and let them help you choose... OR start reading build threads (with proven dyno testing) and simply copy their build sheet. There's a million ways to build these engines and I've found its easy to get a poor performing setup, but equally easy to get a real sweet setup that isn't going to break the bank.

Because Race Car...

I received the Turbosmart vavle used from a Scooby WRX. There where a few problems: 1) the piston would leak vacuum and 2) the piston would stick in the open position. I tried to clean, lube, etc... with no success. The current valve is an HKS, of which I used one like it on my GTi 1.8T with great success so I ended up replacing the TS one.

On top of all that, I think the HKS unit has a cleaner install and the sound it gives when I shift makes me smile :-)
