Never in my life....
A guy brought me an 1835 type 1 this morning for a tune-up. After I set the valves and changed the oil, I went to set the timing. Timing at idle was 28 degrees! Timing at 3000 RPM was 48 degrees! He had the motor built for him almost 2 years ago... I had to break the bad news to him that the guy missed a tooth on the cam gear when he built the motor... Does anyone know if I can see the timing marks if I take the oil pump out?

Re: Never in my life....
You are overthinking, One tooth is way more off than that. It wouldn't run because valve timing would be way out of phase like 50 degrees.
Noticeable in the first few years.
Take a deep breath, have a beer or two, and set the distributor back.

Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.

To answer your question, shortcut hack to check that.
Pull the oil pump drive gear, set the crank to TDC, is the gear slot pointing straight up?

Count the teeth on a cam gear. Divide 360 divided by the number of teeth. That is how many degrees 1 tooth off would be.

Does it not run at normal timing?
Quickest way is to check the rocker movements verses crank angle.

Well using your math the cam is out of phase by 7 degrees? One can't see the dots but that slot is very visible
