micro-stub kit,CV's and axles by Central WA Baja

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

A couple things to add, not from personal experience, but from my research on the subject.

1. A lot of people cut down that neo synthetic with a generic moly grease like "moly 101" in a 50/50 mix. I've never tried it, but their justifications were not only form a cost standpoint, it was to change the properties of the grease to better suit.

2. My understanding is that you could get junk yard chevy "compact truck" bearing and brake assemblies (s10, blazer, etc.) and then buy a "micro stub axle", insert it into the chevy bearing assemblies, and it should work. There was much debate on which years of donors would have the right spline pattern, I forgot the conclusion, but I think it was from the mid 80's.

3. I was excited reading this (again) thinking that CWB was getting excited about building again. :? I will you some baja gumption, not that I have much to spare myself. Please let me know if it finds you.

1)HMMMMMM?

2)There are a couple threads going elsewhere on this topic with part #'s and such for the baring and yeah, I seem to think it was an S-10 there are some things that come into play like spline count in the hub. To be able to use a "Standard" 930 microstub axle. I think it was TMM that has the....I will call em "new guys" as I cant remember the name right off hand, the outfit using a front hub off of a Dodge Dakota??? I think it was? :?

3) Been sick with a head cold since we got home from Vegas. I've spent a couple days in the shop...one helping the kid fix a mangled U-joint in the truck. Been working on a couple "Top Secret" projects also

As for the Baja...well how many pics can I show of me cutting down my tunnel even more....reshaping the "Vin Area" in order to weld it back in and have it look like it was always that way

Guess what? :? My memory failed me again, I guess that shouldn't be a surprise. They were mixing "50/50 mix of Bel-ray antisieze and swepco CV grease". Anti-sieze for the raw lubrication and the moly grease to add texture and tackiness.

Jeesh, that's good for at least a weeks worth of posts right there.

The complete kit pictured is a ProAm from Kartek. However these are what are known as a "Micro stub axle" and can be purchased as just a stub axle from any of the "Off Road parts warehouses. I would suggest calling Dan at dansparts http://www.dansperformanceparts.com/bug ... ystore.htm he is a member here and I am sure he could set you up with anything you need.
Brilliant!!! Many thanks for that :)

Will send him an email and see what dimensions they are. Unfotunately they're not for any VW type car, but one of our race cars in the UK, that eats outer CV joints. We've been looking to have a low bro type adaptor made and no one wants to know over here.

CentralWAbaja wrote: Sat Jan 01, 2011 9:34 am So.... got to have little fun in the shop yesterday...I got to go back into the "storage" side of the shop and dig out a couple boxes that I had not seen in over a year. Kind like Christmas...

Found my rear trailing arms, micro-stub kit,CV's and axles...Understand that all of that stuff was part of the "Original" parts purchase and has not seen light for a long time.

Started to mock up the rear suspension. That just led to the fact that I have no idea what the heck I am doing. Thanks for the help getting me going guys. Sorry for all the simple questions...sure it will not be the last time.

Micro-stub? What is that, exactly? For those of you that know...that is an easy one. And for guys like me who don't/didn't...Well here is the "Anatomy of a micro-stub"

Pull the center cap and the 5 center lugs
Image

And you will remove a well made 5lug to wide 5lug "Adapter plate"
Image

Pull the rotor and you will see that it is a serviceable steel rotor mated to a machined aluminum center.

Separate the stub axle from the hub assembly

Flip the hub over and you have your basic bearing/hub combo (I cant see a part# anywhere) I am sure it is a "Standard" hub of some sort. Looks just like the ones I just replaced in the front of my Dakota a few months ago. Probably out of a Chevy S-10 or something? I am sure somebody out there knows for sure.
Image

Anyway...Never seen it broken down before so I thought I would take a few minutes and do it here.

So on to some other cool stuff that I have no clue how to put together.
Image

I am assuming that it's all good stuff? It was bought originally from Kartek. Wasn't cheap.
Image

Honestly.... I really have no clue on assembly of this stuff. I have read about clocking and such but it never really made sense because I was not ready to do this stuff. Why is there a difference in the inner cage of the CV? Is there an inner or outer side? I see there is a grove in the axle for a snap-ring but none in the box. Are they even used in these situations?
Image

Image

I am sure someone will chime in on this stuff and point me in the right direction.

I moved on to mocking up the arms...again having no idea how..thanks for the help there guys.

I also know that the time has come to move the chassis back on the table so I can cycle the rear suspension...so that is the next task.

The issue is knowing what or which the pic was before Phototoilet flushed.

Ya see there is two ways we can deal with this...We can wait for Leatherneck to bust down this set of Microstubs and take pictures of them again since he now owns them.

Or we can see if CWB actually has his poop in a group like he says he does? And since I have almost a 1000 pics reduced and saved to a separate file labeled "STF Pics" on my laptop. Each pic was labeled and saved numerically so I can usually get pretty close. Its kinda like looking a children's book version of my life here on STF, all pics
