Need opinions and info on my Type 4 build and a shop
Hi all, new member here and happy to have found this site.
I have a 912E that I love, the previous owner had work done to it and I do like the improvement (see attached for the mods). This is my first experience with the T4 and wonder how you all feel about the choices?
My feeling is the car drives very nicely but I wish the power didn't die at 5k rpm. Maybe there was a bit more power to be extracted if some of the mods were different, so that it pulled strong up to the red line?
While I'm at it, does anyone know of a T4 expert shop/mechanic in NY who I can turn to for future work? Cheers - Rich

Re: Need opinions and info on my Type 4 build and a shop
Do you know anymore details about the camshaft?
It will be aftermarket, I imagine but I don’t think the 912E came with hydraulic lifters originally. Is the engine noisy on a cold start (until the lifters pump up).
The 5k power band is mostly down to the camshaft duration, unless there is another restriction in the airflow such as the exhaust. However if you have enough grunt then high rpm doesn’t necessarily make it better. Increasing the power band would probably take more than simple “bolt-on” changes.
The 009 distributor is not a great match to a type4 engine as it has different advance curve. However it does depend on the compression ratio and other factors.
Car looks great!! Service it & enjoy it & worry about upgrades later.

Thanks for the reply, the engine isn't noisy at start up and runs beautifully. The dizzy was upgraded to an electronic 123. My only wish for more and continued power over 5k is at hwy speed when wanting to overtake someone say on a single lane hwy, downshifting to 4th ups the revs in such way that there is no power, so it's best to just grind out a pass in 5th which isn't ideal.Bruce.m wrote: ↑Thu Jul 22, 2021 2:11 am Do you know anymore details about the camshaft?

How about a great IV shop in NJ/CT/LI?

That looks like a pretty much stock motor to me.
2mm larger cylinders don't make much of a difference, and those carbs will make about the same overall power as the FI that came on it.
Not sure there are a lot of options for a better exhaust for the very rare 912E - 2099 units, right?
Chris Foley at Tangerine racing makes a very nice exhaust, but you won't like the price.
His exhaust would be the crown jewel of a motor built costing well into five figures.
That being said,
Some compression and a cam to match would make the motor behave as you desire.
Getting compression out of the heads you have is difficult without increasing the stroke/buying a crank,
or getting expensive custom pistons.
Long story short, you're not going to be making more power with bolt-on mods.
Anything meaningful would involve having the motor clear apart.
The sky (OK your budget) is the limit once you decide to take the motor apart.
A cam and a nice set of heads could really transform things if you wanted to go for it.

Amazing info, just what I was looking for! New heads and cam sound like a good first step. With the Tangerine exhaust, can I maintain heat for the cabin?

Thank you! I sent LN Engineering an email asking for their reco, will combine that with a Tangerine exhaust hopefully.Sixty3GL wrote: ↑Mon Jul 26, 2021 12:50 pm [http://www.tangerineracing.com/otherporsche.htm]

Ditch "hydrolic cam and lifters" I'd be afraid of a motor with somebody didn't know how to spell hydraulic...

FYI I ordered the LN Engineering 2270 kit. Now the decision of whether to go carb or FI?
Is there an aftermarket FI system anyone can recommend?

That looks like complete package deal. I can't think of anything else you would need.

Wow. Nice!
Way to step up to the plate..
You won’t be wanting for power after setting this up.
Did you find someone to do the work, or are you going to tackle it yourself?
