Westfalia 1600 EFI Turbo

Post by blip_mxe »

Hey !

I've now done a lot of miles with my T2A Westy and... It lacks power! So I'm planning to go for a 1600 or 1615 turbo EFI ! Why is that? Several reasons:
- I already made a turbo assembly on a motorbike ( r1 )
- I already made an EFI microsquirt assembly on a Moto Guzzi frankenbike.
- I'm not looking for a lot of power ( around 130cv ) and the lowest possible fuel consumption. So I think it's better to avoid going up in cylinder size. In addition, I think that thicker cylinders will be a good thing for the longevity of the engine.
- Finally, and this is not negligible, I already have some parts left from my previous assemblies.

As much as I know a lot about motorbike mechanics, I don't know anything about flat 4 mechanics! I've read "maximum boost", but I never managed to get my hands on "turbomania"... I know it's obsolete, but I think there's still some interesting info to be found there. If anyone has a clue how to find it, I'd be interested.

So, to start with, I have several questions for you! ( yes, there will be others :D )
- what do you think of a 1615 EFI turbo in a T2 ?
- What do you have to change on a stock 1600 to make it reliable on this kind of assembly. I saw on this website that one of you had issues because he didn't switch to a crankshaft / flywheel with 8 fixing screws. Would you advise me to change the cylinder kit to a forged set, or will the original do the job ?
- The enemy of the turbo is the temperature, so it must be cooled! How to solve this problem without going through a Porsche turbine?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

The trouble with the brick like aero of a type2 is the constant load on the engine at cruise. If that load is enough to get you into boost territory then the fuel consumption and heat will be greater.

With a bug, cruise doesn’t need the torque from boost to keep the speed up. For a bus that is less likely.

I’d suggest a decent intercooler to keep the intake temps down. In a bus, you might need a charger cooler. Probably going to need a oil cooler too, given the load at cruise.

If you avoid drag starts, the flywheel is less likely to need the 8 dowels.

Thx Bruce for your feedback !

Is there enough airflow in the engine bay to fit an air/air intercooler or is it better to go for a water/air?
What do you mean by a charger cooler? A watercooled turbo ?
Indeed, I have to look at the oil coolers !

Drag starts are not on the agenda but hey... It's not safe to say I'll have fun once or twice.

Charge cooler is air to water intercooler. Add weight since you need a radiator, plus fluid, pipes, hoses, pump & header tank
