Pertaining back to points

Post by HPjunkie »

I have two pertronics Distributors that have failed, I just want to convert them back to points. I don't have all the parts for points distributors, and I didn't really want to buy a Chinese one. Maybe I'm overreacting what are you guys recommend?

Source a good used orgininal VW Dizzy... worst case buy one and refurb it. I used to keep 3 or 4 extra's sitting on a shelf (or under the back seat of my daily) with points gapped properly and ready for emergency replacement... cap and all. I may actually have a couple still, but will not be able to sift through my garage for quite some time... A lot of the guys on here will have a spare or two available for sale.

Kind of what I was thinking I might need to do. Do the bearings usually go bad anyways?

Wear happens to all moving parts... If you can find one that's already rebuilt, it would be better... but finding a good one that has a solid feel and no "looseness" spinning it by hand is a great start, and likely usable as-is. If you feel axial play, having it rebuilt or rebuilding it yourself is very worthy of consideration.

When checking for axle play don't forget the up and down motion also. That is not uncommon to miss.
