40 idf hex linkage

Post by Corey Q »

Hey guys,I drifted here from one of the other forums cause I thought u/guys would know.First off I don`t have a type 4.Here is the question,it is in regards to some bran new hex bar linkage from weber,Still in the package(part of type 4, 40 idf conversion kit) , but I have a type 1 ghia. will it go on a type 1 ,dual 40 idfs w/type 1 manifolds??
Thanks guys,

I think the only difference is in the length of the hex crossbar. T4 ones are longer cos the engine is wider, you might be able to shorten the one you've got or just replace the hex bar.

I appreciate it.

The last timr I checked, the Type 4 was
1/4 inch narrower than a Type 1- not that
that has anything to do with the required
width of the crossbar. Go to your friendly
local auto parts store and measure the Type
1 crossbar through the plastic vacuum pack.
CB Performance sells crossbars and intake
manifolds.

Corey
Yup I've got one to go in the Ghia
I'll measure it for you.

Joe
I bow to your superior knowledge.
That does explain why they fit into T1 engine bays !!!

The T1 hex bar is 538mm long, its not yet fitted so I assume I've been sold what I asked for.

The T4 hex bar on the 914/4 is 440mm! & that is fitted.

So much for my earlier post, COMPLETELY wrong on both accounts.
That's at least 2 things I've learnt today.

just a warning: you guys haven't assured that you are comparing apples to apples. There are more than one type of kit using "hex bar" linkage, some are aluminum, and there are two types of steel. It's dangerous to assume they are the same! Measure the type 4 and type 1 crossbars for the same TYPE of kit, then you'll know. The type 4 engine is narrower than the type 1,but you have different types of manifolds for BOTH engines, and linkage differences.

Thanks john,as usual I will take your advice. The kit is a weber metal hex bar deal.If it does`nt work then I will sell it.

Just remember that when hot the engine will expand significantly, so the crossbar needs to be just able to rotate smoothly when cold or it may drop out when hot (if the cup design is shallow)
