I bought a new alternator, intending to take the pulley off the old one and transfer it to the new one. I worked on the thing for 3 hours trying to get it off. I just about destroyed it - it would NOT come off!! I ended up leaving it on and returning it still attached on the old alternator for the core refund.
Ok, I've got a new pulley coming and I would appreciate any advice as to how to install the new one without the use of Valium, whiskey, or anti-depressants.
I'm thinking just tap it on with a block of wood??? So hard to get a decent grip on the thing with the shaft sticking out of the end.
Thanks, Bob

I had the same problem with a generator. The back side of the pulley acted like it was welded on. I used a hand torch and heated up around the pulley shaft and this worked.
To install, I put some "anti-sieze" on the hole that slides onto the shaft, and VERY CAREFULLY tapped the pulley onto the shaft. I guess the years of use and heat buildup make those pulleys weld themselves onto the shaft. I'll bet some of the professionals out there have a pulley pulling tool to remove these as they would say correctly!

When you install the new pulley, it needs to fit good first, then use anti-sieze. Test fit pulley on the shaft. Wont fit? Take a file, and run it around the shaft. Try again. Keep trying till the pulley goes over the shaft with a little effort. You might have to file the side of the woodruff key off a tiny bit. File, test fit, file. It wont take long. Use anti-sieze when satisfied wit the fit. Well, that's how I do it anyway, and have never had a failure or a problem getting the pulley off. See ya.

if you go to most parts stores you can buy a puller for that for about 20 bucks it is alot better then messing with it for 3 hours
