spring plate removal
I put my irs pan on sawhorses and first removed the trailing arm. I then removed the side plate that holds the spring plates on and now the pressure is sitting on the stop just below the plates. I've searched for tech info but nothing really explains it good. I dont want to lose a toe in the process of taking it off. Do I need to place it back on the ground and man handle it or what? Also I don't really see how I would get it back on either. Any info would be helpful.........

there is a tool out there which you can use to remove your spring plate, wghich you can pick out5 from any vw shop. but you can man handel the plate out just be careful when it dose pop out. odd are that it will not pop totaly out but it will swing down, just leave one of the top bolts on at top of the torsion/spring plate cap. as far as put the plate back on, what i do is lower the car back down where i can raise a jack to the spring plate and jack it back up to position and then push it back in.
a important reminder, after you have removed the tension off the spring plate is to mark the angle of the spring plate on both sides so that your bug keeps the same height before you removed the spring plate and so that it(bug) dosen't sit offset.

also,
as afr as your narrowed trailing, are you trying to add wheels with an offset of 7 to 8 in? if that is the case California Imports, www.vwcalimports.com sells a set with all need equipment for IRS suspension, a little pricy thoe. good luck.
