I have a 1978 vw bus with a stock tranny.
the tranny has about 100,000 mi on it w/ the original oil.i'm thinking about changing the oil.
should i use synthetic or stick to the same that is in there now? most likely petroleum oil.

SYNTHETIC TRANNY FLUID?
I have heard good things about using sythetic gear oil once the tranny has been broken in, and I would say 100,000 miles is broken in. It is supposed to give better tranny performance, and make it last longer.

SYNTHETIC TRANNY FLUID?
I have been using Amzoil in all of my VW 4 speed boxes for a lot of years with 0 (zero) failures. I have run used stockers to $3000 offroad race trannies totaling several hundred thousand miles experiance. I cann't even recall a single failure.

SYNTHETIC TRANNY FLUID?
I am not an expert on this and do not have any direct experience but if we are talking manual bus trannys here there has been a lot of discussion on the type2.com list with the strong advice to use only GL4 transmission oil as specified and not GL5 or GL4/5 rated oils
Apparently with GL5 oils there is a problem with glazing of the syncros.
