window rubber causing black streaks on my nice paint!

Post by VeeDoubleU »

every time i wash my VW I get these black streaks that come from my window rubber. How do u keep the rubber from smearing onto your paint job? Some of the window rubber is new and some is old....but they both do it...is there a rubber cleaner or treatment I need to keep this from happening? It really puts a dampening on my usually enjoyable detail.

thanx

I'VE HAD THIS HAPPEN TO ME BEFORE. USE A MILD CAR SOAP AND DONT GET ANY DEGREASER ON YOUR SEALS BECAUSE IT WILL CAUSE THEM TO BREAK DOWN. BUT CLEAN THEM WITH A 4OT STEEL WOOL BUT DONT GET IT ON THE PAINT THEN GET A RUBBER SEALER NOTHING WATER BAISED LIKE ARMORALL A RUBBER CONDITIONER. THE BLACK STREAKS IS THE BROKEN DOWN RUBBER IT MAY NEVER GO AWAY SO WAX YOUR WITH A POLLYGLYCOAT SOMETHING REALLY GOOD FROM 3M AND PAINT AND BODY SUPPLY STORE BUT 3M IS THE BEST IF IT HAS STAINED GET A FINE COMPOUND LIKE FINESSE IT FROM 3M STAY AWAY FROM TURTLE WAX CRAP OR ANY THING YOU SEE ON TV THIS COMES FROM 11 YRS OF EXPERENCE AS A DETAILER.

Hi Steve,
I take it to the do-it-yourself car wash, because the water at my place is too hard and leaves spots on my chrome and windows.

Thanx Ootimoo...Ill have to try that sealent. Would it be like a silicone based sealent? Cuz I have seen those before.

thanx again...

THEE SILICONE IS OK ALSO VASOLINE IS GOOD AND CHEAP LET IT SOAK IN FOR A WHILE BUT USE IT BERORE YOU WASH YOUR CAR SCRUB IT WITH THE STEEL WOOL THEN CLEAN IT WITH WATER AND A TOWEL THAT YOU DONT LIKE THEN SMEAR IT WITH VASOLINE THE WASH IT LATER AT A DO IT YOUR SELF WASH JUST POWER WASH IT OFF AND CLEAN YOUR CAR MAKE SURE YOU GET UNDER THE SEALS BETWEEN THE RUBBER AND PAINT THATS WHERE MOST OF IT COMES FROM. Hi
I have heard that glyerine is good on rubbers, not sure what it would do to the paint. I always use a very very small amount of kero in my wash warm water and no soap or detergent. I wonder if its the detergent causing the problem?

I use the Zymol Soft Seal Conditioner (from Rocky Mnt Motorworks) that is expensive and claims to not have glycerin or silicone in it or any nasty stuff and is supposed to preserve rubber. It may only prevent the rubber from getting to the point of breaking down, but I'm using it on old and new seals and it seems to work nicely. I figure that since it's made in Germany and Porsche uses it, it must be good!
