is this Thing worth it?

Post by GhiaRacing »

So you guys know, I am buying the Thing.
I made my decision last night when I realized that I just needed a change. Always wanted one too. Image
I took a look and he was right on with the description. The engine runs but has some thick oil in it, clean though. I?ll just sell that later. It had some surface rust also but nothing that I can?t handle.

Well, I went to the yard yesterday and found a few Westfalias, older t1 busses and a 911.
I did find a 76 ? Bus that was a T4 but someone seems to have hit it with a sledge hammer making it a ?pancake? engine.
The trans was still on that but I remember that car has been there for a few months now so I can get it when I go back. They usually have about 75 new cars a week.
Will the stock Trans hold a good T4 2000cc up?
I had to have a Rebuilt Bus Trans for my 2300 Ghia.

So now I have to get my parts together.
Do any of you have a list of what should be done? Or parts I should get? From whom? (suspension kits, fenders, etc?) I?ll take used if they?re decent.
I want to do it right the first time, I think I will have about $3K to complete this car myself so everything but the paint will be done by me. I think the suspension is going to kill me? Image And since I have never worked on a Thing I will be bothering you experts for advice, I hope you?re all up to it!

I am going to get the parts from now till October (when I get the Thing out of his yard) and stick them in a storage house.

If you guys have some nice Off Road Things out there let me know, I need the ideas and I need your help. Thanks, Jeorge

Thats Awesome Jeorge. Sounds like you are getting a good deal since it was how he described it. Don't worry, it'll be fun, suspension and all.

We bought a runner in Austin Texas for 1500, passed on a few and decided on this one.

It is true that it is not cheap to restore/repair the Thing. We just ordered the pan halfs, came in yesterday Image

Also waiting on the dropped spindles to arrive next week. Plus the new chrome wheels and tires.

Right now we have stripped the Thing of all body parts and getting ready to seperate the body from the pan to get the wheel wells and interior blasted, then the pan.Once those are done we are putting it back together and start replacing the Fenders with glass ones and fixing the rest of the panels so it can be painted after Christmas Image

The engine is also getting the treatment, Engine is :
1600
CW/crank, Heavy duty rods&bolts
Mahle piston 85.5
Engle 110, Stock rockers&Ratio
044 Heads
11/2 Header modified for turbo
Modified T-25 Turbo with Water/Meth Injection
Dell 40 side draft
Holley pump&fpr

This should get the Thing going.

I will start posting pics next week, on the different stages.

You`ll probably get offers to sell your 181 spindles.Do`nt give them away. The bug is raised about 2 1/2" and retains a stock ride with them. Good for Baja bugs. Congratulations and good to have you here on the 181 forum. Good luck. bob Ingman
