I need new mufflers anyway for my '74 Thing and I saw this header exhaust sytem for sale at JC Whitney.com
http://www.jcwhitney.com/productnoitem. ... 97&BQ=jcw2
It claims that it increases horse power 15%, does anyone have this header or know if it works.
PLUS a question to all California residents, is it legal for CA emmisions?

Can a new header exhaust system increase H.P.?

That is the S&S system that has been around for THING's for many years. Most who have used one, including myself, "feel" more power over a stock system. 15% over a stock system isn't going to give you a boot in the butt, but, still, it feels better... Certainly the extractor will help, but only to the limit of the intake shiner.
We recently heard that J.C. Whitney was backordered at least 60 days on this so you might want to contact S&S directly at www.ssheaders.com.
Although 1974's just bacame smog exempt in California, the egr fitting is provided and mine passed smog several years ago with the system in place, therefore it should pass the visual should you ever be subjected to an inspection. Because the factory system is not longer available from VW you are allowed to use a comparable aftermarket system.
There are a few other systems out there, as well as original stock types and I am sure other forum members will chime in soon.

I had no problem with the S&S system on my 73 when it was required to be tested in CA. The DMV book shows dual exhaust for the test facility to inspect.

Letmeehan,
I have installed the monza style system
on my 1974 Thing. The system is basicly
two J tubes, the muffler and a customized
tail pipe system.I beleive it was designed
by Mike Humeston.
If interested I have photos and a how to
do CD, sent to me by Mike. It's about
10 megs.

letmeeham do`nt be fooled into the idea that any one component is going to make power. Power is the result of a well(balanced in relationship) configured engine. Intake, valves, cam. Pistons and cylinders, Exhaust all in proper relationship to each other. When you see a manufacturer baost of a X hp improvement then you must realize this is in conjunction with the other components. When all else is in place bolt on a good exhaust and the HP rating goes up. Good luck. Bob ingman
