Hi all,
Took my Thing front end to my local VW
guy to get the ball joints replaced.I
purchased them from one of the Thing
shops. The problem we discovered is the
new ones are about a 1000th of an inch
too big. They will just start in about
an 1/16th of an inch. If we attempt to
press them in,they will be distroyed.
Interesting that beetle ball joints fit
perfectly except they are too short.
Anyone have this problem???

Did you purchase the ball joints from "The Thing Shop"? If not, some aftermarket products are like that. Why dont you have ur VW shop guy mic it then call "The Thing Shop" and have them mic of theirs and see if theres any difference.

Wayne the B-joints everyone seems to be using are the ones from Pimpride that ave always available on E-bay. They are German quality and the price is good. Everyone using them has said that they are very happy with them.
Better check that you do not have a combination of 181 and 111 parts on the car, What is the comparison when you hold the two joints side by side? Do they look different. I should think that .1000 inch would not be a factor in fit. That is a very fine tollerence for a press fit. Five or ten thou maybe . Keep us posted. Good luck. Bob Ingman

Ball joint install
The ball joints are from Thing shop and
I have since chatted with Larry. The ball
joints being the wrong size wasn't what I
was concerned about, it was if I had the
correct control arms.
The old ball joints look exactly the
same as the new ones ( shaft length etc)
it's just that when you put the new ones
in the hole to be pressed in, they just
go in about 1/16th of inch and they
just look too big so they are afraid of
distroying new ball joint.
This is an experience shop, but I know
they do not see many Things, there just
are not many here.
We are just being careful...
