Center Mount Starter for Bus Trans

Post by Sean Rupp »

In the buggy i am building for my fuel injected type4 motor i need to relocate the starter to the top middle of the bell housing. Before i start cutting and welding i thought i would ask if anyone makes such a contraption. i have heard rumors of such things but no confirmed sightings. I need to relocate the starter in order to lower the rear seats in the nostalga frame. Never liked how high the rear passengers set.

The center starter is on the Golf diesel engined five speed vanagons I believe. I have seen one in my life. I want one for my 091 transaxled baja bug.

Bell Housing bolts right up. 002/091 5 rib, and 091 six rib all use the removable bell housings. The center mount starter bellhousing is of course for golf engine conversions.

Years I am not sure. James Lutz knows but he probably won't tell you unless you promise to buy one from him Image .

Steve is correct on the application and the fact that the only engine that will bolt to it is a Inline 4. If you want a lower profile starter, look at the aftermarket hi-zoot gear reduction starter. they can be configured with the solenoid in like 3 different locations. That is done by rotating the starter and solenoid about the axis of the mounts. Not sure if one starter can be configured all ways or a specific one for each orientation is offered. Price is close to $200.

Don't know of any other way of dropping the back seat down. How about using one of those height checker signs like Disneyland uses- "If your head touches the bottom of this sign, You are too tall to ride in this seat"! Image

If the golf diesel is the only thing that will fit that housing and the type4 wont fit it, im not likly to use one. I think i can do it by sectioning another housing and carfully welding it back in place. The proper starter alignment is critical but otherwise it would seem to be fairly easy to do.

I like the disneyland idea and the rollbar will definatly serve that purpose, but since i am over 6'tall and the young un's are growing fast i'll stay with the lowering idea a little longer. Besides i never liked the "Beverly Hilbilly"mobil look of the rear seat. Sets way to high.
