Help
My Thing let me down today. Stock engine with the exception of Compufire and S & S exhaust. Going down the road lost power and died. When restarted would die with any throttle but when restarted it would idle fine. Choke was open. Fuel in see-thru filter. Rotor and cap looked ok. In desperation I tapped on the float bowl and carburator fuel cut off valve. Ran fine after that! What do you think? Any comments welcome.

In the Bentley Bible it suggests to try these remedies for the problem you stated Suggested Problem (Fuel Starvation)
1. Clean main jet
2. Clean float needle valve
3. Check fuel pump pressure and increase if necessary
4. Clean fuel tank
This all points toward a full volume fuel delivery problem.

My Dearest Cuzin Stubb: I understand your desire to share your nearly infinate knowlege of the air cooled engine. Despite that, when you are at the library using the public's internet highway please also consider using a dictionary so that others beside BM can understand what you are saying about tire pressure. In case some of you do not understand what Stubb is trying to say. He is trying to communicate (in his own educationaly deprived manner that your carb is trashed.. K-mann

Help
Last weekend I left to take the first over 100 mile trip with our "73" Thing. I got about 75 miles outside of Memphis and in truck traffic all of a sudden I lost power. I don't know how many of you have travel through North Mississippi, but the hills were a true challenge.
I decided to get off of I 55 and let the trucks get ahead of me. As I came off the ramp the Thing died.....I mean no amount of cranking or popping the clutch would get a slightest fire!
I finally got it to crank and it was like "You want to move?" the Thing suddered and tried to die. I had no fuel getting to the cyclinders. I knew I was not firing on all cyclinders so, I made it to the closest phone and with my trusty 800 number I called home. I did everything I could think of and what Mr. Diesel told me to try. Got it fired up and finally made it to the interstate to get back home.
Sunday we spent checking out the fueling system...do ya know how hard it is to find a fuel pump in Memphis on Sunday <shudder>?
By that evening we gave up.
Monday, we opted to see if it was ignitation system. We got a 009 Bosh, new plug wires, and began rebuilding. Still no power. GRRRRRRR! Frustrated with what was happening we search this site to find something we were missing! We found a post on this site about the same problem we were having and one thing suggested to those we had already done was to adjust the valves! So hubby decided to check the valves. The valves were so tight! Adjustment of the valves provided the firing power we needed! Our Thing is running great and I got a new ignitation system out of it!
