If you are interested in building a seriously strong and big type 1 configuration engine you should consider a oxyboxer.
for details check my Oxyboxerpage: http://www.gearheads.dk/oxyboxer.htm
for the moment I have a converted enginecase for sale with all needed wbx parts. (stainless pushrodtubes etc.) -use a wbx or a stroker type1 crankshaft.
(a type1 flywheel will need a little work to match up with the wbx oilseal, but then you could run up to 88mm stroke)
The case is the late 2.1 model (after ´86) wich has extra room for stroker cranks from the factory.

Those collaspable pushrod tubes work REALLY well in a t1. Swap them around end for end and use them with the big end out in t1 heads that have had the holes moved for more clearance for the push rods. Slight fitting required 1st and then after that, any push rod/rocker combo fits and doesn't rub the tubes. Plus easily replaced if one tube gets munched.
Disclaimer- not all results may be the same, but they sure work for us and a few others I know. Not sure if it would work on a wassser cased motor.
