I am trying to build a very quiet motor for my beetle. A loud noisy motor isn't for me, but this wbx seems to good to be true and plus it has some power to it.
My orignal plan was to build a type I 1776 with hydo lifters, but I am very interested in a wbx engine. I was wondering if I were to keep the waterjacket on how quiet this engine is? Is it like the more modern cars, where you can hardly hear to it is on?
how quiet is a WBX?

Depends on what you call quiet.. compared to a modern vehicle then no.. but then you dont have the underbody sound proofing materials, ever looked under a modern vw/audi bonnet??
Its still fairly mechanical, but will naturally be quieter than an aircooled, the silencer will make a big difference..
Hydro lifters in an aircooled seem to be a no no.. but as far as I can gather work ok in the wbx, at least with a std cam... anything other than stock i would want to go solid..
You would be able to pack a lot of sound deadening material in the engine compartment and even an undertray as you dont have to worry about airflow to cool the engine.. just enough to prevent baking any electronics.
