Pushed the 88 Wolfsburg Vanagon home before the guy changed his mind. All the power stuff seems functional...(Windows/mirrors etc)

For better or worse, it is in too good a shape to strip for the motor and trans from what I have seen so far

Ok, on the 2.1, all 4 cyls have cracks between the valve seats.

On an aircooled, instant junk.

As I have said, watercooled motors seem to handle this forever in some cases, I had a diesel rabbit that had simliar cracks for >200k miles... Any different here?

Do I send these out to Headflow Masters to have them fixed up, welded ,new seats/bigger/ported, or should I just get some AMCs? (or who?)

Another thing I noticed-- The odometer shows like 230000 indicated, but there is NO ring step... No apparent wear in the bores that is visible wo pulling the liners... Nada. Nothing. Cross hatch still visible. Nice.

Hardly even any carbon ring, (piston crowns do have some, no evidence of water in chambers) so I'm thinking that it may have a fairly recent rebuild in her. (Or that wbx motors wear like diesels...)

(Last owner bought her from a local clergyman, so I will be trying to get some history this week if I can track him down)

Next question--- Are all VW automatics that freaking big? I remember them being much bulkier than a manual, but that thing looks 4 feet long, the diff area looks completely different than I remember. (longer, the actual (front) transmission part looks the same as I remember)

What are the suggested sources for parts/gaskets and such for these things?

Ok, 20 questions over, and thanks in advance.

Hey there, yep I have similar questions aswell..

I have a 89 caravelle 2.1 that I have just bought. Man this thing fly's.. although I was good to it on the motorway keeping it a 3k I came up to a clear section and I leaned on the pedel. Woah it can cruise 80-90 no sweat and keep really cool.
Fantastic machine.. its good to hear that yours seems to have covered a fair few miles and still the motor doesn't seem too worn.

As for parts my local VW/Import parts shop got all the gaskets and stuff the next day from when I requested them from a local distribution warehouse. But I am in metro Atlanta which might help.

... Moral of the story you can probably get any gasket you need in a matter of days.

Also check out www.Busdepot.com as they have loads of parts for these engines... Except mains.

Interesting thing on a knock sensor setup that'll work using later model VW parts and the right "black box", http://www.volkswagen.org/EngineSwap/

Scroll down, there is a nice schematic, with part#s.

It automatically retards the timing...
