Post by Jim Andritsakos »

I have see over the years some water cooled beetles to have the radiator mounted where the engine firewall used to be.I would like to make a similar setup for my car and any info about something you know about these setup(s) and/or some pictures it would be great...

Thanx in advance.

Radiator recommendation ???

As far as I can tell, it's a case of measuring a radiator from a likely candidate and going for it.

Recommendations are only going to be relevent depending on where you are from.

Steve C here used a Ford Transit radiator, some people use Golf, and I am looking at using a '95 ish EL or AU Falcon radiator myself. Doesnt help you much as I think only the golf is available in Greece, your sure as hell not gonna find a Ford Falcon!! Image

Look for one from a relatively large capacity front wheel drive, this way you already get the thremo fans that fit with the radiator instead of having to fabricate them in.

Radiator recommendation ???

Ì plan to take a look in some from the AUDI models A6,RS4 as they are with my opinion quite large. How about to use a Davies Craig electric fan ?Falcon is a rarity (I don't know even if one exist here!)...I have get some radiators from early Mercedes inline 6 and V8 but the are not suitable.Opel rekord and ascona don't fit.Even vw 183 iltis doesn't.Transit fits its about 36x60 cm but is this suitable or is quite small as I was have read that the rear mounted radiators have to be quite big as possible ???

just my thoughts..

I used a davies craig 16 in fan on my turbo toyota crown project with great success. I would have no issues with using one again, and considering this is the most arid continent on the planet I recon thats saying something Image it managed to deal with 45°C days with no problems at all.

I really think radiator choice will come down to you visiting a few wreckers yards with a tape measure and finding something suitable.

Radiator recommendation ???

Hi Jim and all,

I'm looking into the same for my Fastback. My theory is to get one with the largest surface area possible to fit behind my front valance which I'm grafting in some Type 2 vents. I'm more fortunate than Type 1 owners as I have more space to play with. I might look at a VR6 rad, I'll probably goto a local Rad specialist with measurements and see what comes up, also probably be roaming around the local breakers yards to see.

Just for info, I just bought a 1994 Golf turbo Diesel, this has a dual rad fan setup, however the 2nd one is driven by a small belt by the other. But the fan motor is a bit deep. I may look at using an aftermarket fan such as KENLOWE which some have very shallow motors.
