Did you make sure you placed the speedo cable back into the speedo head firmly?nthang wrote:I just installed a new vdo gas guage in my 74. Nothing else was changed. The guage showed half a tank and the car ran out of gas. Does anyone have an idea about what may be wrong?
Also, the speedometer goes to about 25 mph and stops increasing. It was working fine earlier today. The needle returns to zero when I stop. What may be wrong? Thanks.
You might also want to check to make sure you did not loose the C clip off the speedo cable at the left front wheel. I know it is a pain to replace the speedo head back into the cable. I would check and make sure it is set in place. If it is in place at the back of the speedo head; then remove the left front wheel and see if you see the "C" clip and the tip of the cable still in the center of the grease cap. If you do not see the tip of the cable then you will have to thread it back through the grease cap. Pry the cap off and you should see the speedo cable. Then place the cable back through the grease cap...hold it with a pair of needle nose pliers and place the grease cap back onto the spindle....keep hold of the cable and replace the C clip back over the cable. Replace the wheel and take a test drive.
As far as why the gauge is reading wrong could be perhaps the wires to the gauge are on backwards? Or perhaps a small leak in the float?
