Hi, I have a 69 Ghia with some tranny problems. I was told that I cant use a bug tranny because a ghias tranny has a longer 4th gear. Can anyone help me answer this question?
Thanks for your help

Actually there's a germ of truth to it - some late `Ghia transmissions do indeed have a taller 4th than the Beetle trans of the same year, but it's only by 4½%, the difference between .93 and .89. In `69 Beetles and `Ghias were geared identically; if you use a `73 or newer Beetle trans it'll have 1st, 2nd, and 3rd that are 6% taller than what you have now and 4th will be about 1½% taller. None of these differences are big enough to matter much for most applications IMO so you can pretty much use any IRS trans, just make sure the clutch cover matches the release bearing system (changed in `71) and you'll need to install the early shift housing on it to allow a late trans to mate up with the `69-`72 front mount.JC-ATL wrote:Whoever told you that is completely full of S H I T.

Exactly (or vise-versa). The only real issue IMO would be that a small engine in the heavier `Ghia could have a tougher time pulling the taller gearing of a late trans when starting off on a steep grade. I have a 3.875 R&P trans in my `69 Beetle and it's just fine with a 1600SP.JC-ATL wrote:this doesn't preclude use of a Beetle trans in a Ghia.
