I looked at a Thing roll cage yesterday and the owner says it is a VW cage from when accessories were still available from VW dealerships. Anyway, it is a 5 point cage and appears to be in good condition. Three questions:
1. Is there such thing as a VW roll cage for a Thing?
2. Assuming answer to no. 1 is yes, what's a fair price?
3. The horizontal tubes that connec the front hoop to the rear have holes in them and these pieces are bolted in, rather than welded. Is this right?
Thanks,
Rick

Yes, there was a dealer-installed aftermarket roll bar available for things. The front bar should go straight up vertically, before connecting to the horizontal bars. If it bends towards the rear, then it's a ThingShop replica of the original aftermarket roll bar (they corrected it so that you don't hit your head).
I don't know for certain how the horizontal bars attached. The ThingShop replica bolts together, so I'd assume it's probably the same.
No idea what they would go for, but the new ones from ThingShop go for $485 brand new, with all the hardware (bolts, nuts, washers, backing plates, etc.), so I certainly wouldn't pay more than that - after all - they are both technically aftermarket products anyway.
