I recently got my hands on a...... "Genuin original Never(NOS) used still with the original Vw sticker on all the front and back fenders"(One front left and one right and the back fenders to...........and an lovely grey paint....on them..... so here is my question boys and girls,...how much are this things worth for type 4 enthusiast...........they are for the 411 2 door.
They are definately 411 and not 412 on the fronts? The rears should fit boh 411 and early 412 in 1973. Pristine fenders have been going for about 80-100 around here. I could probably go that much on the rears. Ray
The front fenders are for the 411 fastback or Vanagon, the back fenders will only fit for the 411,beacuse the rear lights are more higher up one the back fenders than one the 412.....but to be honest ,should i keep them Ray?
Actually...you should keep them. At least over here, what you would need to get for them will probably not be forthcoming. The market is not large enough yet...or desperate enough for parts. Put them in a cool dry place and hang on. Actually...they will fit 412 through about January of 74. The 412 used both patterns of light in the rear. I have 411 rear fenders on my 412. They are identical. In mid to late 74, the 412 went to the skinny low taillight and the heavy ugly bumpers over here. What a find! Ray
Hi Ray, I have never seen a 412 with the 411 type taillights. As of the start of the 412 model in August '72 the tail lights moved upwards (by about one tail light's height) together with the bumper. A similar thing happened with the Variant (Wagon), where the bumper moved upwards, however, in this case the tail lights could not move up because of the height of the luggage floor/underside of third door, so, they became narrower. This is easy to check when you compare photographs of 411 and 412, e.g. from sales brochures, (test) reports/articles in old magazines etc. Maybe it was different in the US, however, I can hardly imagine that.
I do know that the 412 in the US received larger bumpers later on.
If your 412 has 411 rear wings, then you will also have 411 tail lights and a 411 rear panel. I am curious to see what your car looks like.
Jan, if your front wings are absolutely new and without rust, I would consider buying them, provided the shipping costs to The Netherlands are reasonable. Let me know.
Cheers, Jan Peter
The changes in august of 72 were in front end only. The changes to the rear came after december of 72. That is when the skinny lights came in.
You bring up a good point of reference. The variant, I belive , changed right away because of the deck you mentioned. The 2 and 4 doors did not change to the new skinny lights for a few months. My 412 2 door is a november of 72 and uses the wide 411 pattern light. I also had a 4 door 412 of december make...that also had wide pattern rear taillights and and narrow steel bumpers. Ray
That was not the case for EU. As of August 72 (73 model year), when the 412 was introduced, the rear was changed as well as the front. The taillights were as big as the 411's, however slightly different in shape, but moved upwards, just touching the waistline, while at the 411 the lights were sitting just above the bumper, about 15 cm (guesstimate) below the waistline. The bumper also moved slightly upwards at the 412. The rear wings and rear panel did change therefore to accomodate the lights at their new positions. I am not aware of any additional changes to the rear for the 74 model year. If you like I can send you some pics of 411 and 412 rear sides. Jan Peter.
That would be really nice thank you! To this point I had no idea that there were subtle changes like that to any of the EU vehicles. I have owned just about every type and year 411/412 shipped to this continent. They generally fall into two categories...actually 3. The first...late 70-71...different interiorand trim parts..but 411 all aound. The after august of 72 412, that was except for minor changes...a 411 with a different front end. Now...a few months later....it got the large aluminum bumpers...and skinny tail lights. Those were the shock absorbing bumpers. The front side lights also changed on the 412.
I would assume that you did not get that silly aluminum shock absorbing bumper. That would probably be where the differences started. Thanks! ray
