411 engine & auto trans into a TI, doable?

Post by Freq2002 »

Have a line on a 411 drivetrain, guys is wanting a TI & I'm considering a trade. Curious if anyone has tried to adapt the TIV auto to a TI.
It's not gonna be a racer, strictly a cruiser & an auto would be sweet.

Before the hail storm starts, yes I know it's gonna be a pain, & yes I'm willing to go through the trouble. I want an automatic & a TIV powerplant, this is a easy start.
Just curious if anyone has done it & if they have recomendations.

Thanx for any help.

I'm not sure about the sizing and the framehorns...but the auto trans in the 411 is essentially the same as a type 3. Just a different bell housing and stub diameter. Its also heavy so you will need a top hanger bar. The engine of course will need to be an upright conversion. You will need the entire shifter assembly and cable ...and it wil need to be shortened. You will need the rear doughnut mount, and will have to swipe the gas pedal assembly from a 411...or the micro switch assembly from a type 3 with carbs to make the passing gear solenoid work. If it fits in a type 3...it should fit in a bug. Be sure and change the seals between the final drive and the transfer case before you install it...or you will be sorry. This should have excellent gearing for a light car. It oughta zip if its properly adjusted. Ray

Cool beans, thats the kind of info I need.

It's going into a volksrod, 2 seater coupe with Ford solid axle. Car wont be too light when i get the cage weleded in, but thats more for stiffening the frame than prepping for race. I used to have a '71 411 & it was damned fast for a car that size, so I figgure I should get a good run in the rod.
The engine is supposed to be a stroked 2.0L as well. Runs dual 1bbl Webers. Not too worried about upright conversion as I'm doing massive mod to the rear end & an upright may be a bit cramped. Already planning on feeding it cooling air via NACA ducts direct to the fan.
Would like to add a turbo later on & a pancake motor would allow me room to put in the turbo & still be able to build it w. a rumble seat.
This is just a photochop concept pic, the front end is complete except for steering.
