two questions actually.... how to tow and how to tow with a Vanagon.
I kind of inherited/ am buying an 87 vanagon 4x4 do i have to tow it on a flat bed i assume?
and can i tow with it? i would like to be able to tow my other VW's to car shows with the vanagon eventually and was wondering what the load rating was and if it is even a good idea to tow with the van. my van needs a lot of work, so this is kind of a far off plan, but i was wondering if it was at all possible.
thanks!
towing???

I regularly tow my Bug with my 2.1 caravelle and boy its nice and easy. My Velle pulls the bug around on a A-frame really nice. I think you can check the load ratings on Vanagon.com.
You should have no worries with your syncro lugging a Bug on a frame or even a trailer.
Just take it nice and steady.

Vanagons can easily tow other VWs; I tow the Thing and Ghia regularly, have towed a VW-powered airplane (on a trailer). There are different hitches available (check busdepot.com for parts, vanagon.com for several years worth of discussion). You just can't tow really heavy loads without trailer brakes, or really heavy tongue loads.
As far as towing the Vanagon, there is not a commonly available tow bar like used on type 1s, I would use a U-haul tow dolly or something. (tell them its for your little VW, they may not let you have it for something as big as a Vanagon).
