Grinding noise

Post by rollin900 »

I have this horrible grinding noise coming from the front passanger side wheel(or around about there). It only makes this noise when i turn right. Any ideas about what this might be?

Thanks

Nick sounds like a wheel bearing. Jack that wheel up and hold it at 12 and 6 oclock. It should barely have slack when you push and pull . Spin it and see if it is noisy. If so take it to a shop. Quick and easy to fix. Good luck. Bob Ingman

i second bob's diagnosis. just had the same exact thing happen with mine a couple of months ago, just on the driver's side (and it only made noise when I made a left turn).

keep in mind that once you start haring the grinding noise, the bearing is already shot, and you're going to begin damaging the spindle on which it sits (your steering knuckle). it'll also get progressively worse, so don't drive her anywhere except to the shop.

it's also dangerous to drive around like this, because if your bearing locks up, you could lose the wheel. mine locked up on me, but fortunately (and ironically), i was literally pulling into the shop's driveway, and only going a couple miles per hour.

be sure to check the condition of your spindle, and consider replacing the driver's side bearings as well. also a good idea to check your brakes and backing plates while you have everything taken apart up there.

contact mike basso at things unlimited if you need new steering knuckles - they're hard to find, but he should have them in stock. i got mine from him in only a few days, and the price and quality were great.
