Rear shock part #'s Bilstein

Post by raygreenwood »

I found crossmatch #'s for the rear shocks on the 411/412 for Bilsteins if anyone is interested.

The KYB cross match is: KG5406
It is also the same shock that fits the front end of a 1979-86 ford econoline E-150 1/2 ton.
The 3/4 ton E-150 and E-250 use the KG5410 which will also fit...but is about 10% stiffer.

These also fit the rear of a 79 Ford F-150 with 4.9L "K" chassis. Thats where I got the cross match.

Bilstein # is B46-1325.

It cross matches generically for both the KG4506 and the KG 5410 in KYB...which makes sense since Bilstein is load sensing and a bit stiffer.
I am working on the front strut cartridges that will cross from and Audi/quantum in Bilstein. You will either have to use KYB GR-2 for those...or Bilstein adustables to keep from breaking anything. I will also soon have the drawing postable on how to make those fit. Its real simple. Ray

I'm not sure if you already know this, but if you can't find a cross match with the proper valving, Bilstein can revalve their shocks/struts. I think the charge is right around $60.

Unless something has changed...Bilkstein oly custom valves their racing shocks. Those run about $179-320 ea. depending on the configuration. The other thing to know...is what to ask for in valving. Bilsteins internal configuration is totally different than most others. In fact most big brandsare unique in one way or another. A KYB GR-2 with valving for a 4000s would act totally differnt in Bilstein valving...as their is always significantly better than stock. It might be an interesting conversation to have. For a better example of what i mean...the KYB GR-2 for Audi 4000S and the high pressure KYB gas-a-justs for the 4000s are valved to the same basic damping rate....but if you use the high pressure ones on th front end of the 411/412...it will wreck the ball joints and strut mounts quick. It just damps too stiffly. It ends up smahing the springs in the ball joints. It transfers the load instead of absorbing it. It not progressive enough. Thats why I woul think that the adjustables may fit the bill...they can be tuned down. ray

Thanks for the note on re-valving. I will see if they are willing to custom valve their base shocks. It may be nice to know...if say...I bought the model listed above and knew now that it would be better with 10% more or less valving. Ray

I'm not sure if the base shock, the TC, is able to be revalved. But the Heavy Duty and Sport shocks can be revalved and rebuilt. It probably requires special tools to take the shock apart though, that's probably why they need to be sent to Bilstien to be revalved or rebuilt.

Let me know about any mods you make and how it goes.

I'm down in Madison and have a wagon.

The 412 isn't at the top of my project car list right now...I've got to get my Corrado back together for ice racing season, still got a couple months yet.

I haven't decided exactly what mods I'm going to do yet, I just want to have something that will catch the Hondas off gaurd. If I can get in the low 14s that should take care of 99% of them in the Green Bay area.
