SCAT Watercooled Engine

Post by jasonb »

Does anyone know anything about this engine?
Is it based on the Wasser engine or the Type1 or something else?

I can't see water jackets in the cylinders!

I've never seen a Scat water cooled flat 4 before. They still sell a V4 water cooled engine for desert racing.

I found this also on the Samba.

It doesn't look to me like the cylinders have any water jackets but how could a car run 50 laps without any type of cooling on the cylinders?

For anyone who is interested; I emailed the person who is selling these engine parts and this is the reply that I got.

"The motor was designed about 20 years ago to use type-1 crank and cam. The cylinders needed no cooling because the motors were run on methanol which burns cool. The cases are still made today by Scat, but the heads are no longer made."

Pretty cool stuff. Anyone up for a methanol powered street engine? :D
