Was the thing trans stock r/p 4.12? and what was the stock tire size on a thing? I have a baja and am trying to get a good trans combo that will work for my tire size. I am running a 28 '' tire in the rear now but will soon go to a 30'' in the rear and a 28 in the front. I am looking to change to thing drive axles and flanges as well so if any one has these for sale let me know.
Thanks Brian T.

The Thing trans has a 4.12 R&P. I believe they also came with 185SR14 tires.
For 28 or 30" tall tires, you will rarely use 4th gear if you have a stock gearbox. To bring the revs up closer to stock, a 4.37R&P will help. Or you can go all the way and get a 4.86 R&P.
If you need Thing IRS transmission drive flanges, send me an e-mail at: a51split@canada.com
I have them.

This will help you get an idea of the gear ratios.

The answers you have are right on, a few 4.37 ratios were made, mostly for Mexico and the vast majority were delivered with the 4.12:1 gearboxes. for more info on this see the thread here on the 181 forum Facts and Figures and parts interchange. There is a chart there with 181 ratios given. Good luck. Bob Ingman
