louvers

Post by mstatedog »

My 74 thing has the bulky looking "scoops" on the sides above the rear fender. I've noticed that some things just have louvers that are flush against the body. Someone give me some history on this. My scoops have been hacked up by the PO. I would like to take them off and install the flush mounted type....can I get these somewhere....and how do they mount....with rivets???

The 73 Things were equipped with gas heaters and had louvers.
The 74 Thing had recycled engine heat and scoops. Perhaps the scoops were to increase the volume of air available to the fresh air heater. Good luck. Bob Ingman

Hey Dog you might try The Thing Shop in Chandler Az Or Things Unlimited in NY state. They usually have some Used thing parts. Best of luck. Bob Ingman

You may want to contact Jay at NuVintage VW in Arvada, Colorado

call 303-422-4237 . He has a mighty big Thing parts stash.

He can provide you with the repair louvers that you seek.

Also check out his web page and select Things and Parts.

The entire body is different in the louver area......You can make it work, but its quite a job.
