I\'m a little worried

Post by Ron »

Yes, I just went over at noon and took my friends "Bugzilla" for a test ride. '72 standard beetle, Rancho trans, t-4 2.0 stock except for dual valve sprgs(1.8 heads) 284 duration cam dual 44 webs and FAT exhaust. This motor only has about 400 miles on it. I put the trans and engine in for him last year. I did not build the motor. He said when he bought the motor, the person who built it fired it up on the stand "and it revved to 7,000 no problem" Arrrgggh, I cringe at the thought of a new motor revved that high. Anyway, back to my sorrow. I only drove it for about 2 miles today. THe lifter were hammering so loud we could hardly talk inside the car(had the bottom back seat out, but...still shouldnt be that loud) I pulled a valve cover off and there is at least .040 clearance on #3 lifters. I know it's warmed up but seems major extreme to me. I told him to let it cool, reset the valves. I'm afraid of a flat cam due to inadequate break in. What else should I do besides check the lift with a gauge?

I would reset the valves then change the oil, look for iron in the oil with a magnet (it helps to use a clean plastic bucket), if you don't see a lot of iron in the oil I would run the thing another couple of hours listining closely and recheck the lash if the it's still in spec then run it Image
Or you could get a dial indicater and check all the valve lifts see if you have a low one

If the opposite cylinder,#1, had the same lash trouble..................... you will be tearing it down. Hate to hear that. Been there, done that.
