412 Brain, do I need it any more?

Post by Debido »

Seems when the prior owners removed the F.I. and added dual Weber carbs. They pretty much cut the cable from the "brain" to the engine/F.I. But there seems to be some other wires connected to a small box next to were the brain sits "hangs". Does the brain do anything else besides connect to the engine/F.I.? Can I disconnect the remaining wires and remove the brain entirely?

The wires to the box are the power wires for the FI system to the main power relay. Just pull them off....but do not discard the brain. They almost never go bad...ever...and they run about $300+ rebuilt. You should be able to get about $65 or more just good used. They are getting scarce enough that its just good to hang onto. Actually...the car runs better on the FI. You may want to use it someday. Ray

Cool, I will sell it then. Are dual Webber 34 ICT carbs (I think that's what is says on them) any good for a 1800 engine?

Yes, even the lower C/R´d US version will run significantly better with F.I.
The 34´s are most likely on the small side for it. The 1800 T4 (car version) likes relatively large carbs. Stock US version is 40 mm sgl throat. w. 28 mm venturies. and 7,3-1 C/R if my book is right .
If yours was born with F.I. I would think that it has about 8-1 C/R Mayb even 8,6-1 like the Euro carb engines. If the last is the fact, you will really wake it up by going back to a well functioning F.I. or stock 40 mm Solexes.
If you cant find those, give Ray or me a buzz. i´ll see if I can´t help you out.

If it really is an 1800, and came in the 412 in the USA..it was L-jet.
Yes the UK models came with 8.6:1 (AN case series 40 PDSIT carbs with 30mm venturies ..85 hp) or BRC case code with 7.8:1 and 40 pdsit carbs with 28mm venturies @ 75 hp.

US version was L-jet at 7.3:1 and 76 hp. So for sure the FI will help quite a bit. Especially if you get the compression up to USA 1.7 specs (8.2:1) or Euro 1.8 specs.

What country are you in? If you are in USA...which I suspect due to the cut FI harness, if it is a US version 1.8...its most likely 7.3:1 dished pistons. Ray
