new '73 412 and tranny

Post by swervyjoe »

hey hey

i just got a '73 412 Variant. The original owner had it untill '96. The 2nd owner drove it for 6 months then let it sit for 6 months. He couldn't get it started so it sat for 6 years. He gave it to the person i bought it for for money owed. Who then took off the FI and put on a single webber to get it running and sell. It has just over 100 thousand original miles on it.

I originally bought it for the FI and heater boxes and am deciding if i should keep it or not.

I went to drive it around my neighborhood and it was shifting hard. Like a jolt between gears. At stop signs it would stall unless i put it in first. Anyone have any ideas whats up? Also any recomendations on what to check in general or little 412 secrets i should know? What are the prime rust spots on these?

I have been reading this forum, type4um, and FI forum for a while and appriciate all the information i have received. i have a '72 bus i'm working on so i'm familiar with the typeIV engine (which seems to be fine on this car) but nothing about FI. I want to go back to FI.... What parts have to be replaced, how do i test the rest?

BTW: has anyone used the rubber offered by reVOLKS.com?

peace and thanks

There are two main problems with the auto trans. (1) the vacume signature to the modulator valve must be correct. It very possible that teh carb set up is delivering the wrong vacume to that part. (2) as things get old....like the bands etc...they must be adjusted. Get the brown bentley type 3 manual. The tranny is 100% identical. It will tell you how to adjust. Hard shifting is common with trannys that need band adustment and the modulator valve adjustment. Ray
