91 Van -- Which Engines Fit???

Post by MNAirHead »

Howdy.

I'm a total New VW idiot.

Had someone in our VW Club ask me what engines fit into a 91.... I'm guessing that there are some retrofits...

Would an 80 aircooled fit???? Other 91 Watercooleds???? or are you stuck with trying to find a direct replacement...

He threw a rod and is looking for a replacement -- location = Minneapolis.

Warm Regards -- sorry for only knowing the airs.

John at aircooled had a few factory (VW) 2.1 remanufactureds left... But some have had issues with the VW rebuild quality.
(John at aircooled.net is AWESOME, but repeating what I've gathered about the VW rebuild issues)

A 1.9 will fit, but there are slight differences in the cooling system.
(is a 90 a 1.9 or 2.1? The thrown rod indicates 2.1...)
The swap is doable either way.

A T4 will fit. Unless you build a NICE one... I would suggest a Subaru conversion. I'm a T4 FAN, but a vanagon...Is huge.

Of course a Wasser can be rebuilt for less, if the heads are good.
(bloody unlikely)

google "boston engine VW"
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

thanks for the reply...

I'm aware that a Subaru conversion would require a Kenedy Adaptor......

Is the Aircooled a direct bolt on to the tranny?

Would a Jetta, GTI etc bolt straight on or is there some engineering to go in.

All subaru engines needs an adapter from KEP.
Also all inline 4 need te adapter too.
2.0 air cooled fits right in.
As for the waterboxer from the year I suspect it was a "MV" series 2.1l 95HP engine.Practically any year will fit but you have to deal with three things : cooling system , exhaust ,engine wiring loom. The most easy solution is to buy a complete longblock an to swap all the existing parts from the old engine.

good luck
