Automatic tranny seal

As recommended by Ray in a post a few months ago, I'm going to replace the seal between the two halfs of the tranny (the one that keeps the two fluids seperate). Is the seal in the picture the correct one?

If so, where can I get one. I didn't check yet, but I would assume they aren't top sellers at the local part store.

Any other recommendations for maintenance while everything is out?

You know...I havn't looked for one recently. Check the dealer for sure. Also look for major transmission overhaul places. The parts are all Borg Warner. They are bought and sold somewhere. Ray

Hey in the imported collision estimating guide for auto transmission they show a gasket set number # 003 398 007. The only other gasket they show is the pan gasket. I couldnt find any other in the genuine parts catalogue 1990. Hope this might help? Bill
p.s. Napa Auto Parts show a auto trans seal torque converter seal metal clad ATP14909 for 3.49?

Yep! That torque converter seal is at the other end of the shaft. I think it is sometimes in the 003 kit. If not, it should be replaced when possible. ray

Sheeeoot! They are in Dallas! I have a couple of Autos for my 411/412 in storage. I am a 4 speed man all the way on these. But....lately, I have been thinking...that if the 4 speed availability ever falls apart...which it very well has done in the past, it would be nice to have a complete rebuilt auto to drop in. Now that I run a lot better HP...and have a good idea how to adjust these things and run them...they would not be bad to have at all. I might see what they could put a rather complete kit together for. Ray

I just talked to sales at www.bulkpart.com and they said that they no longer offer the gaskets for the Type 4 auto tranny in individual pieces. They do however offer it (the one I need) as part of the "72026 Overhaul kit, 003 1969-76" for $45.00. I thought I'd share in case anybody else was looking for this gasket as well.

Any information or advise about what other seals/gaskets need to be replaced while I have everything out would be appreciated.

It will pay to take a look at the brown type 3 Bentley manual. It is rather complete on this tranny. The o-ring on the governer should be replaced, as well as the shaft seal on the torque converter, the shaft seal between the two halves of the case, the paper gasket and the 0-ring. Pan gasket and filter go without saying. The two outer stub shaft final drive seals and the filler tube o-ring will keep tings leak free. Look in the bentley for adjustment as well.

Since you have it out and apart. It really would not be a stretch to remove the stub shafts for seal replacement....and pull out the differential housing...just 10 nuts. Give it a good cleaning and check the condition of the bearings and backlash. The Diffs last a very long time, but there are no replacements. If the bearings go and you don't catch...its toast. Ray

bentley has a web site. Also...for $16..I noticed that bulkparts sells a factory manual. That would be especially valuable if its the borg warner manual. Ray

Thanks for the links vwbill, here's a picture of my 412. It's been sitting for about 6 months. I had some better pictures of it when I was driving it often but can't seen to locate them right now. It's down because I was afraid to drive it without replacing the tranny seal. Well.. then a tree fell on our house during hurricane Isabell. That affected my car working time a little.

But now I'm back on track and ready to get going again.

I know once you have the tranny going she'll be lovin life and we all know all cars(any car) need to be driven or the trouble starts,lol!
