I have a lead on a 1.7 914 engine. After reading Tom's article on compression ratio, I have a question. The stock c.r. is 8.3 and since I'll be using carbs I feel that the c.r. needs to be lower (in light of the lame gas we have). Are barrel spacers the answer?
also what are your suggestions for an exhaust system that will fit my bug?

If you have lost deck height due to flycutting the heads or custom rod/piston/crank setup, then cylinder shims/spacers can be used.
As for the exhaust without heaters, I am a fan of the merged header/dual quiet pack setup from FAT Performance. It's part number is ES731. It looks really similar to a Type 1 merged header and will be my choice when I install a Type 4 in my Bug.
If you want the heater boxes, I believe Joe Cali shows how to modify a Bus header to use on a Bug. Find the link on the Links page of "Type 4: Secrets Revealed". It involves some cutting and welding, but it doesn't look too difficult.

Yes FAT has a catalog, well lets just say they don't have any old ones, and their new one is "going to be out in 7-10 days" for the last 3 months. Call them up and get on the list for when it finally does come out.
