Best way to go on a wasser engine
We are all talking about the oxyboxer conversion, but what are peoples experiances with the basically stock type V 1.9 or 2.1. As said before they are largish capacity, low power units as stock. Where is the efficiency lost? Is it induction or exhaust or tuning? I know from just looking at it the stock pierburg set up is a POS. What are the basics to get the type V going? We don't all have mega budgets to go the oxyboxer route even if it is fun talking about it

Hiya Timberwolf, I think the combo of juice lifters, mild cam and lower compression and of course the weight of the vanagon go a long way from performance. BTW, Can you get carb kits for the Pierberg carb on your side of the Atlantic??? I need one and they aren't available here stateside. Thanx, Ol' John

Hi Mrbajadude! Yep the loss of vanagon body and replacement with tube chasssied manx clone does wonders for performance, but as always it's never enough!
I've got a merged header into a turbo silencer, 120 cam, solid lifters and stock just about everything else. I'm wondering about highratio rockers (see other post) and a different induction set up.
I don't know about rebuild kits, I would think it's always going to be preferable to go to a twin carb set up and chuck the pierburg, but I'm just wanting some personal experiences. A freind had a pair of kadrons on her van and it made a world of difference, they were second hand too, looked like something from the black lagoon! Her boyfriend fitted them with some welded manifolds matched to the heads.
Another rather sad reason I have for getting rid of the pierburg is that it looks crap! In the buggy it just cries out for a more minmalist set up than the stock rats nest of pipes and wires!

strapping on a pair of twin carbs is a simplish mod and worth about 10- 15HP
you can get waterboxer manifolds from www.customspeedparts.com
ive got a set of dell 40's but on a budget you should still see a good improvement with 36's off an alpha 33 or sud.
if you fancy stripping the engine down, beetle cams fit straight in and slip in type 4 (i think) solid tappets.

I just scored some very cheap down draught twin chokes off an old MG meastro - remember them??? What were the guys at BL on??
"I know lets put those left over maxi engines in it put some groovy carbies on them and slap on the sacred MG badge, no one will know what a nail it is till is too late......"
I'll have a word with custom speed about manifolding, I think they are 36 idf's under all the gunk.
