Drivers side front sag. Advice?

Post by Cal Dez Rat »

All this talk about leaves and arms. Do you think my thing needs new leaves? I have the front axle adjustors twisted to clear my front 215 X 15 tires on 3 1/2 centerlines. Fenders are not bent.

Rat I`m a little surprised that no one has answered your question by now. I was hoping Marc V would be by and help on this one. Does sound as if you have a problem and I am not at all sure what it might be. Begin with the basics. Tire pressure, shocks.
Jack the front of the car to clear the tires of the pavement. Block it there. Remove the wheels. lift the drums up by hand and use your jack under the drums to compare travel checking to see if there is slack in the drivers side or if it seems to offer less resistance. Try to back off the adjusters and readjust them with no weight on the front end of the car. To be real honest with you I cannot immagine the leaves breaking because of the way they are stacked in there but that does sound like a definate possability here.
Hopefully someone will have more experience with this and offer better advise soon. Best of luck. Bob Ingman

Check the stuff Bob mentioned (I'd start by pulling the shock loose to see if it's the problem). Leaves can & will break, especially if they're rusty.
It was mentioned in another thread recently that someone was having trouble getting their 181 leaves into Sway-a-Way adjusters, I don't recall how that was resolved...but I know that 181 control arms will fit just fine on Beetle/'Ghia torsion leaves, so if yours are broken you should be able to replace them with bug parts - although the H.D. ones from Sway-a-Way would probably be justified in your case.
