Clymer, Haynes or some other publication.

Each has their moments. The haynes is the best overall...especially for the manual transmission info. Of the three, the clymer is the only one with gas heater info. Chilton is a piece of junk. It uses stock photographs....from a bug in some cases. Its only saving grace are a few charts and the section telling of th dimensions of the never anyhwere else mentioned...feeler guages , necessary to align the type 4, 4 speed. None of them have any useful information on the automatic transmission. Unfortunately, Bentley never made a manual for this car. Ray

There's also a glove box-sized manual by Peter Russek, published 1974; reprints show up on eBay once in awhile. Basically a condensed version with drawings but no pictures.

Bentley does, in fact, have a Type 4 manual but it's only available on CD-ROM as part of a Types 1 through 4, 1969-1979 set. You can ask for it if you see a Bentley tent at your local VW show. Here's a link if you want to pay full price:

 ... Well I guess $100 isn't too bad, considering the limited amount of information out there.

Wouldn't mind finding a used, or discounted one though
