yesterday I pulled the engine to get a look at what's going on. I could not find any reason for the clutch NOT to engage. Nothing obvious. I checked all the mechanisms - everything looked to function normally. I reinstalled the engine and I still have the same problem.
At this point, I give up. I'm taking it to a local shop this week.

Chris sometimes its wise to know where do it yourself ends and seek professional help begins. I`m sure the issue will be resolved as being something minor, a defect or an overlook. Meanwhile look at the bright side-you got extra practive at engine removal and installation.
There is only so much we can hope to accomplish as do it yourselfers but over a period of time the bar seems to raise without conscious effort on our part. We just naturally learn as we go. Please keep us informed as we are curious at this point. I have nearly contacted you to see if anything was up.
If you had not got your parts from Jake I would be inclined to think you have a 914 flywheel installed. Due to its depth everything would look correct yet not function correctly. Best of luck. Bob Ingman

agreed
Agreed - I'm a beaten man on this one.
I just don't understand it - it most probably will be something innanely stupid. I've NEVER had this sort of issue with a typeI.
That's ok - I accept defeat in order to learn something. I'll keep y'all posted.

Alive and well
It's funny that you wrote today - I towed my Thing 100+ miles today to a shop in Dallas. I should know more later this week. I'll update when I know more.

Believe it or not
Believe it or not, they haven't been able to get to it yet. They are backlogged with work. In fact they were supposed to call me today with an estimate. As soon as I know anything, I will post it here.

WOOHOO! Success!
Do you ever have those moments that you feel absolutely stupid? I did yesterday when the guy at the shop told me there was no throw-out bearing installed. Yeah, those things tend to help.
But I swallowed it ... and blamed it on my buddy.
The important thing here is that I'M ON THE ROAD.
OMG! Jake, you have changed my life. Your TypeIV is incredible! I drove around for hours in the cool spring night. Clear skies, top down, power up. I cannot wipe the smile off my face - even this morning.
One MassIVe happy customer.
