Proud parent of a 2 door seeks advice.
Jumped right in I did. Still a little dizzy. It's the one there on ebay that VWbill was kind enough to share with everyone from the other 2door posting. I was hoping no one would notice my very little $200 first bid. The bidding went all the way up to a whopping $350- the horror. I laughed, I cried, and I still don't know what I bought. The folks there said they couldn't let me on the property. Still, it looks better than a parts car.
Been following the forum on and off while I finished my last project. Enjoyed the obscurity, low prices, Ray's limitless knowledge, and just flipped when I caught those "custom" and "track" shots from Tom's Type Four Corner website. The hook was/is set.
Have spent the last week reading the book..ahem...posts regarding the system rebuilds neccessary to get back on the road. I'm now wondering what's current. Ray, I was wondering if I could send you a PDF file of your old posts collected and slightly edited for you to proof and edit yourself. This could be the begining of your own "411/412 Reader" you could turn folks on to now and when interest in these cars starts to climb further. I posted a few months ago on this subject and I never followed through--My bad. Now that I have vested interest, maybe I can help.
Drop an email if this sounds agreeable.

Cool! I'd be happy for that! A note on projects I am working on. I must apologize for my seeming procrastination the last year on the struts, the center links, the copper diaphrahms and a few other fuel injection related knick nacks. I changed jobs....again on december 1st. I live in one city...where my toys are...and work 200 miles away. I'm commuting at the moment...and have just decided that I will not have an actual "home" for most of a year. My company has built a new plant in the Philippines. Most of stuff...save for a handful of small projects to take with me...are going in storage for 3-9 months. I have to help get the new line starightened out. But...with nothing concrete to work on of my own...I can hopefully complete the drawings I need to drop into the forum. Ray

Lady luck and her brother fate. The car is complete(I think, my head is still spinning) and rust free(aside from the deck lid), the paint under the car even looks solid. Large amounts of fluid under the engine/gearbox, but no matter that all gets rung out shortly.
This is the type of car every restorer should be blessed with-no trees
(at least you get a few cars with your tress in Alabama though).
Breaking the system rebuilds into chapters and I'll be sending them off to Ray shortly. Jens at type4.org has added alot of technical materials to his site since I was last there, but maybe that's old news.

Ray,
I've been tossing around talking to you about maybe using your first hand experience and compiling it on my Type 4 Corner site. Would you be interested in having a section like "Ask Ray" and there we could post the FAQs and you could explain in detail. That way you could do them as you have the time.
If you are interested, let me know. It would be a great way of sharing your knowledge with the rest of the world.

Well my head was spinning. I'll need a drivers door. One of the stranger places for damage though. Three or four inches above the push down lock on the window frame. Just enough bend to mess with window and it's mechanism. Doesn't appear to be from another auto, no other surrounding damage. I'm guessing handle bars from a motorcycle.
Anyway, Word file has been sent to Ray. Thanks again for your time in these matters.

Has the Car ever been in Alabama? Could have been a wayward tree limb swung by a Madman saying "ITS WORTH MORE THAN YOU PAID FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"Erik H wrote:Well my head was spinning. The two door doors are the same as the wagon. Just be careful. There are two different arm rest designs. They have totally different mountings and dod not mix and match. They are pretty mutch 411 and 412. The door bend you are describing, is what stupid people do when they are trying to close the gap from shrunken up weather seals or putting on a new door. The tops of the doors can be bent really easily. They can also be bent back really easily...so don't throw it away yet. Ray

Great, then I'll let the pro paint and body folks look at that. But, just to be clear...I can use a wagon's front door, but it should be a 412 wagon like my 412 2Door. Apples and apples, yes? And finally, just to check my work, Ray did you receive that Word file? Or has the posted email here changed?
