That doesn't look ike a bad deal either. I could of read wrong, but I think he said that they were both 4 spd cars and one is a wagon. Never heard of that before.

If they are 4 speed wagons, they are either tourist vehicles (gray market) brought in by people touring and returning with a car, or they have been converted. Converted cars (if all the correct parts were used correctly) will be identical to factory. There are no chassis differences between 4 speed and auto vehicles. All of the holes and brackets are already in every vehicle. It takes about an hour to add the parts to the pedal cluster for the slave cylinder and pedal....or just swap the whole cluster. The hold down brackets for the clutch lines are already in the car....as are the holes where it exits the body. The holes behind the brake resoivoir for the the 3 exit model are already there. The hole for the shift rod bushing is there. The mounting holes for the shifter are there. Just simply add the correct rod, the rear plastic guide cap and boot...the coupler....the clutch line and cluster....and the tranny. Its about 4 hours with the engine out. Ray

Is it really worth the effort swapping a good auto tranny to a 4 speed ?

got an email back today from ole Elmore about the cars, said he has talked to a guy who works for a company that SELLS PARTS FOR TYPE 4's and this person has indicated an astronomical price for the vehicles. HMMMMM I think he is trying to jack the price up on me. I told him I am not interested in the cars anymore, that he waited to long. He sent me some wild breakdown of what he wanted for the vehicles, $475 for the car without the front suspension????

Sounds like he will do a lot better selling them to this guy and should go ahead and do so. Also, he should immediately stop advertising them, and stop wasting everybodys time.

Yeah?...what company would that be that sells parts for type 4 vehicles? ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha...snort. Leave him be. They will be sitting there until they are worthless.

Yes...its very much worth it to have a 4 speed type 4. Though a properly tuned auto is no slouch (that in itself is rare)...the 4 speed is much nicer. Its also much nicer driving than anything VW put in any of the ACVW. The final drive is 3.79:1 or 3.91:1. 4th gear is 1:1. These things get up and go! Ray

His reply to me was that a deal was done and that he would pass on my email to the new owner to inquire about parts.

I'm sure he made a good haul. Over the years, I have found that the vast majority of 411/412 went to just a few areas. The washington/oregon area had the largest amount. Why? maybe the weather...maybe people of VW "mind" with lots of money (these cars were over $4K new in the arly 70's...enough to buy a cadillac).
Another huge area was the upper new england area..though the volume of was small comparedto the NW area. The last...peculiarly...was in the Nebraska, colorado, northern oklahoma area. Again..probably the weather...gas heat and being a VW and all. I'm sure though we don't hear about it, the shops that work on 411/412's in the upper NW have lots of business. Ray
